I am an astrophysicist. I work at Jodrell Bank (you might recognise it from BBC’s Stargazing Live TV show). It is in the Cheshire countryside just outside Manchester. I work there ar the world headquarters of a project to build the “Square Kilometre Array” – the biggest telescope in the world. I’m from Ireland, where I went to school and University. But I’ve also lived in the UK (where I went to University, again!), Germany and Australia. It is not uncommon to work in different countries in science jobs.

I don’t have a typical day really! I am sometimes in the office, sometimes heading to the airport to fly to conferences around the world. I have a mix of work on telescope design, presenting at meetings/conferences, astrophysics research (using telescopes around the world, doing maths, trying to figure out weird mysteries in space), helping my students, …
