I am a chemical engineer, researching one type of clean, renewable energy for the future.
We are very interested in hydrogen as a clean fuel. The great thing about hydrogen is that when you burn it, the only by-product is water. As well as that, hydrogen is already a crucial ingredient for lots of big industrial process – such as the fertilizer which we need to feed the world (maybe you’ve learned about the Haber process at school?). Hydrogen is one of the main building block for organic chemicals, so it’s used all over the place in industry.
Although hydrogen is clean to use, the way we make it can use a lot of fossil fuels and produces a large amount of greenhouse gases.
I am trying to find a solution to this. I am researching new ways to produce the hydrogen so that the way we produce it is clean. If we can do that, hydrogen becomes a very exciting opportunity to help clean up our energy system and fight climate change.
My research involves a mixture of different types of work – sometimes in the lab, sometimes modelling and coding on the computer, and sometimes sharing my research with team-mates or even big international conferences.
