I am a Social Epidemiologist at UCL. Lots of people think that an epidemiologist studies skin!! Actually, a social epidemiologist is someone who researches how our social lives and environment might affect our health. My research looks at carers and how caring might affect their health. I also lecture in statistics and epidemiology at UCL.

My usual day involves the following:
-I start work at about 9am (my job is very flexible in terms of working hours) and I sit and check my emails.
-I usually have a couple of meetings a day with my students. Some days I have to write or give a lecture on statistics or epidemiology.
-Once a week I have a meeting with my project team where we discuss our research and what we’ve done that week.
-My research involves using a computer to do statistics. I often listen to the radio or Spotify at the same time if I’m doing something really boring. I also spend quite a lot of my time writing up my results to submit for publication at a scientific journal or to do a presentation at a seminar with my research group or at a scientific conference.
-Scientific conferences are one of the favourite parts of my job as I get to travel to lots of different places around the world. This year I am going to Manchester, Liverpool, Amsterdam and Stirling. Last year I went to Germany and Washington DC. I usually go to two places a year. It’s often an excuse to tag on a holiday and do some sightseeing!
