Well I started my undergraduate degree at 18 and I finished my PhD at age 28 so 10 years for me, but I know people who have taken 7 years and some who have taken many more years. For me, during a lot of that time I was actually employed to work as a scientist so I was able to earn money and work towards my PhD at the same time.
I wasn’t planning on becoming a neuroscientist when I started my physics degree. I wanted to do particle physics. But when I got there, I wasn’t enjoying it so much, so I changed my mind and started doing more medical physics. I didn’t think about neuroscience until I started my PhD (2008) and I guess by the end of my PhD (2012) I was a real neuroscientisit! So 4 years!
