good question, straight to the heart of employment in academia. I’ve just finished a DPhil 3 year studentship. It covered course and college fees and a ‘wage’ of about £15,000 a year tax free. So, its not a massive amount for the oxford area, but is still a little higher than others that I have seen. Soon, I’m hoping to get a Postdoctoral researcher position, which typically pay around £31,000, so a nice pay rise there 🙂

Academia wont be the best paid compared to some industry positions, but it can still provide a solid income – once you get past the “student” stage.

The average professorial salary is £75,000.
      Look here: https://www.glassdoor.co.uk/Salaries/professor-salary-SRCH_KO0,9.htm

But there are variations. Salaries in London are higher, on average, but so are living/commuting costs. Medics are on a different (higher) salary scale from non-clinical academics (I am a non-clinical professor in a medical school).

Totally agree with Sam. Around £15k for a PhD studentship, then it gets upwards to £60k and beyond the more senior you get. There are solid payment schedules for lectureships which you can find here: https://www.ucu.org.uk/he_singlepayspine. Which spine you end up in is decided per-University if I understand it correctly.

As Sam and Dmitry mentioned, if you are doing a PhD (I’m in the final year of mine) then you get paid what is known as a stipend, it works out to approximately £15,000 a year but once in the working world it depends on what you start at and then you can hopefully move up the pay skill when you gain experience
