Engineering is a very broad field, all types require maths and physics, so make sure you get those in! and that you like them! any others is dependent on the type of engineering you want to do and what you are interested in.

Physics and Maths are a must. They provide the basis of understanding that engineers have. I would also say something which is software engineering or computer science as this is where lots of engineering is moving to. I chose Biology which interested me. Make sure that whatever you do you pick subjects that you find interesting as this will make it easier for you.

I’m guessing that you mean school subject options. I went to school in Scotland so I did eight Standard Grades (Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry, Computing, History, German and Home Economics) which are similar to GCSEs. Then I did five Highers (Maths, English, Physics, Chemistry and Computing) which are similar to A levels. And finally four Advanced Highers (Maths, Physics, Chemistry and Computing).
Generally speaking, I’d definitely recommend Maths and at least one of the sciences. Different sciences can lead you into different types of engineering so go with the ones that interest you the most. Computing can be useful to build up knowledge of programming. Technical classes or design can get you into the world of designing products and using tools. English is one that a lot of people don’t connect with engineering but it’s really important to be able to write in a way that people can understand. Languages are also really useful if you want to work with other people around the world.

Hmmmm as well as the great replies below, I’d suggest having a look at something like Craft/Design+Reality, or Craft/Design+Technology, so you can have a go at the subject area while at school, and show your first workplace..”I made this”.Also have a look at something like computer code / IT / Programming, a lot of engineering or science needs people with IT / programming skills

Hey 567cars24, you’ve already had some great advice from the other experts! I would say that Maths, IT and Computing are the really important ones — Electronics will also come in handy!
There are lots of engineering roles in IT — some people design and build software, some people design and build the computers, and some people run the computers and design the systems by which users access them. There is of course, also IT security. Whichever of these ends up being most interesting to you, a solid background in maths and IT at school will definitely be useful. You should also look for any after-school coding clubs which may run near you. They can be a lot of fun, and will help you learn some of the more interesting stuff a bit earlier!

Hi,
It would depend on what field of engineering would you like to take part in. The basis of engineering is science and maths, so I would study those subjects but it is also a creative field, so design and technology or art could also help.

Physics and maths are likely to be the main requirements. However if you don’t take these at A-level this doesn’t mean you can’t still go into engineering. Lots of universities offer foundation years to cover these or some apprenticeships will cover these too.
Some computing skills would be helpful too but this is less likely to be a direct requirement so it’d be enough to learn some coding yourself rather than taking an A-level.
