It was difficult because you have to put in a lot of hours of hard work and sometimes you really do not know how to solve a problem. But also it is very satisfying because you get to be in charge of your own time and pick projects that you find interesting!

I have only had two months in total not in work as a scientist since I left University and that was because i was waiting to emigrate to Canada. It is hard work and you are constantly learning and trying to come up with new idease. Sometimes it can feel like a treadmill that you want to get off, but if you have good support and work in a good group then it should be fun. remeber, we come up with new ideas all the time and dont often have to do what other people tell us. Thats the good bit about education. The more you do of it, the more choice you should have over you career and future.

I would say that it wasn’t. If you’re enjoying working in science, then you will feel motivated to work hard. I find it very difficult to force myself to do something that I don’t want to do, but I found it quite easy to put in the hours needed to get a career in science. I would find it more difficult to do something else!

Depends on what you mean by ‘difficult’…

It certainly was a lot of work, through PhD for example, – and I continue to work a lot but I really like my job so that’s fine! Balancing a scientific career with parenthood is tricky but it can be done both for couples and for single parents.

Becoming a professor is certainly competitive but there are a wide range of interesting scientific careers so hopefully everyone finds something they are good at and enjoy.
