I think the best part of working in science is getting answers to your questions. For instance, one of my questions is :

How important are kelp forests to marine animals/communities?

And this weekend we noticed that basking sharks, squid, jellyfish, dogfish, spiney crabs, edible crabs, and all sorts of other animals were living in the kelp!

My favorite part of work at the moment (I’m a PhD student!) is building the technology for my experiments.

It’s such an amazing journey to go from an idea in your head, to working through its design to having actual people use and enjoy it as well as having a positive impact on their lives. For example, I worked on a smartphone app recently which shows which of your friends you accept most notifications from.. kind of like SnapChat’s ‘streak’.. with a goal to showing people how distracting notifications can be.

I think it’s the problem solving aspect of it I love so much. When I hit a problem and have to find some way around it – the challenge is just fun! (I may be slightly competitive haha!)

My favourite part of what I do is probably always learning something new. In the area of science I am in I do a lot of my research and analysis on computers using a number of different programs. Science is always evolving and there is always new programs being released and something new to try. It can sometimes be difficult to get your head around these new programs and techniques but it is really rewarding when you have that day when you finally get it.

I also really enjoy getting to talk to fellow scientists or people in the general public about my research.

I think I have more than one favourite thing from my job. I get to work with adorable robots, and I get to work with people from different backgrounds. For example, the project I am currently working on is an interdisciplinary project between engineering and psychology. So seeing how different disciplines can be mixed together is quite rewarding.

The best part of what I do is making new discoveries! I love coming up with new questions and then doing experiments to find out the answer. Its also very rewarding to work on questions relating to breast cancer knowing that my answers could one day help improve treatments for patients and help them live longer.

In my job, we spend a long time developing, designing, simulating before building the spacecraft and it’s subsystems, but my favourite part is when we take what we have built and test it. We shake it and we blast it with noise and we shock it. It is all quite loud and intense. Everyone is very proud when we pass the test and prove all the hard work was worth it.

Seeing something you’ve been working on as computer models, lots of reports and even more meetings finally getting built!
