Sometimes I get to be the first person in the world to know a new result. That is really rewarding. I get to work on interesting and important problems (reducing infectious disease spread), to visit interesting places (Washington DC, Hawaii, Brazil, Thailand, Australia, …) and work with great people.

It was not a rational choice π Across all of my prior jobs I enjoyed teaching and investigating. Science seems to offer both.
More pragmatically, I had a maths degree, and I wanted to do something related to computer science, but without hardcore programming or hardware. With that in mind I found a person who agreed to supervise my PhD, and ended up doing human-robot interaction π

I almost didn’t as I nearly became a lawyer. In the end it was a combination of enjoying science at school and a really good university open day where they did explosions in the lecture theatre!

I love science, they’re just so endlessly fascinating – and you can literally change the world with them – what’s not to like?!

I saw a black an white film when I was young and some of the actors were wearing white coats and working in a lab. I( thin that was my first thought of maybe science was for me. Then, I enjoyed it at school and my parents let me take this route. I graduated from Uni 25 years ago this year and have been employed as a scientist ever since. So it can be a career and its always varied. Its global too so you can move around the world doing science. I took my family to Canada for three years and worked on kidney transplantation and now I teach and run a lab of my own.

Ooooo, I’m not a scientist π I’m an Engineer, get me out of he…hold on…was invited back….so… if you accept me as an engineer ( multiskilled, mainly electronics ) here is my answer to your question…..I always want to know how things work, which lead me to find work out engineering and science is all about solving problems. There’s always a “problem” ( or quest ) , it’s finding out how to answer that quest / solve the problem that makes things fun and interesting.
