I live with husband and two children in a small village on the outskirts of Stroud. My son is 13 and my daughter is 10. As well as organising my family and taking them to all their extra curricular activities such as hockey, cubs, scouts and gymnastics, I play hockey for Stroud Hockey Club. I generally play for the Ladies second team and coach our U12 girls. For the last 2 years , I have been committee Chair. Being someone who likes to be involved in everything, I play centre midfield – some defending and some goal scoring! To keep pace with the younger members of my team, I also run regularly along Minchinhampton common.
To keep in touch with my non-mathematical side, I have recently joined a book club and try to get through a book a month. The last book I read was ‘the Race to the Moon’.
My weakness however is a good bar of chocolate and a glass of red wine – Cadbury’s fruit and nut is my favourite.

I work Corin Group in Cirencester which designs, develops and manufactures orthopaedic implants – primarily knee and hip replacements.
My role involves leading a team of engineers running continuous improvement projects and to provide ongoing engineering design and development support to all areas of the business including regulatory, manufacturing, quality and marketing.
The support can be varied from checking a risk analysis to updating and revalidating an implant design due to a necessary process change such as a machine upgrade. A recent change has been the introduction of linishing and polishing robots and our process and designs have had to be reviewed and updated to ensure that the products remain within tolerance. The motivation for the changes is to be make the business processes more efficient and the product more effective. All the designs are produced on 3D CAD and the need to ensure that these are as accurate as possible is becoming ever more important as the move to digital twins / virtual manufacturing becomes the norm.

My typical day consists of a mixture of responding to design queries from other internal departments including manufacture, procurement, quality and regulatory. I attend a variety of meetings from design reviews, reporting on project progress, and discussing issues. I assign tasks to the engineers in my team dependent on their ability, experience with Corin products and current work load to ensure that the engineering content – drawings, 3d models and documentation – is correct and up to date. I spend time discussing solutions with my engineering team from how to develop improved designs to how to solve issues that have come up. The best part is however when I get to learn about our products and how people’s lives have been improved.
As well as keep on top of project work, part of my time is spent running the department – signing off holidays, answering HR queries, working on engineering procedures and organising training. This helps the team to grow and contributes to keeping the team motivated and focussed.
