I did quite a lot of GCSEs because I did some in Year 10 before the majority in Year 11. I got 5A*s, 5As and 2Bs. The subjects I did were: Maths, English, English Literature, Chemistry, Biology, Physics, Engineering (double award), Design and Technology,German, Geography, History, ICT (short course, so half a GCSE)

I did well in my junior cert (which is the Irish equivalent to GCSEs, but my results didn’t really have much impact on my career. I did really enjoy my science classes at that stage though!

I was fortunate in two ways when it came to choosing my GCSE subjects; firstly I knew that I wanted to be an engineer in the Royal Navy, which meant I knew the subjects they required; secondly my school was offering a trial GCSE scheme focussing on technical skills and topics which also included a day-release to a local FE College. This meant that my GCSEs were tailored to the career path that I had already decided to follow. The subjects I opted for were: Maths
      English Language
      Physics
      Technology
      CDT Design and Communication
      Information Technology
plus a BTEC ONC in Design and Fabrication from the FE College.

I could have done English Literature too but decided not to.
You may notice that I did not do Geography, History or any of the other traditional humanities options; this was because on the trial scheme Information Technology was listed as a humanities subject so I opted for that to keep everything focussed on technical things. But in hindsight I should have continued with Geography as IT in the 80s was pretty limited, much of the technology in the syllabus was already out of date if not soon to be out of date, and the things I learned on that GCSE (at that time) were not at all useful in my career, whereas Geography is a subject we ALL need to have an awareness of.

I did my GCSEs 10 years ago, so things are very different now! I did 10 subjects- Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Maths, English Literature, English Language, History, French, Music & Graphic Design. So lots of different subjects, and I’m glad that I did a big variety. I got an A* in all the subjects I did apart from Music- but grades like that are certainly not essential for a scientific career.

Erm, I wasn’t very academic at school at all. I did my GCSEs about 25 years ago (yes I’m that old :):) and it was decided that I would drop French GCSE so I could concentrate on English, Maths and Science. I actually got 4 C’s which might not sound impressive however I got the worse grades in my year for science and I was struggling to get a D grade in maths so although not the best grades for me they were. I don’t think you have to get the highest grades, I think it’s all about how you think. If you ask questions and want to know the answers then you are already a scientist because that is what we all do….just try to find out answers

I got B’s for most of my GCSEs, I think I got two A’s. One in geography and one in History. You don’t need to be an A* student to get into STEM subjects. STEM subjects are more about passion and willingness, and wanting to solve big questions. While good grades do help with that its not the end of science for you if you aren’t as good with exams as others.

Hi, I grew up in Scotland though i now work in England and live in Wales, so i didn’t do GCSE’s instead i did what were called standard grades and are now called National 5’s. I did Art, Biology,Chemistry, English, French, History, Maths and Physics., I got mostly 1’s (which confusingly in Scotland is an A) and one 2 for history.

Note engineering covers all levels of abilities. As well as the academic route, there are apprenticeships and opportunities for all. The best candidate in my experience is someone who has great practical skills that compliment academic abilities – this can be in both the individual and as a team

Most of my GCSEs were pretty bad 🙁

I did best in Maths, ICT, and General Science (Combination of Biology, Chemistry and Physics). My other subjects were Drama, German, English, and Philosophy (Bs to Ds).

Don’t be discouraged though! Like others have said, there’s a lag effect in science where people who are good at it only find out when they’re not being examined.

I got a C in GCSE Astronomy and now it’s my job!

I was around before GCSE – I got 6A, 4B and 1C at O-Level way. back. The C was French, but I’ve studier that a fair amount since then and added some german and spanish. Languages can help quite a bit alongside other things.

      I got 4 A’s, 5 B,s and 1 C. The C was in Physics which I hated, and I’m so glad I didn’t have to do Physics A-level to progress further.

I did 10 GCSEs. I got 2 A*s, 7As and a B. The subjects were Maths, English, English Literature, Art and Design, Geography, French, Resistant Materials with Business Studies and triple award science (Biology, Chemistry, Physcis). These results helped me get into sixth form. A lot of jobs like you to have a c grade in maths and english so they are the mosyt important to do well in.

I got a real mix, I did really well in science and maths (A*s and As) and then As, Bs and Cs across other subjects like English, English Literature, German, History, Art and Music.
